These dates are very outdated done from the summer of 2000.  By the way most of the trips here are based upon who you could receive United Mileage (Mileage Plus) with because that is who I usually travel with.  Varig is one of the current (Summer 2000) Star-Alliance members along with United, Air Canada, Mexicana, Lufthansa, Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines along with nine other members from all over the world.  There are three other major Brazilian airlines.  Trans Brazil is probably the second largest (sorry I don't have accurate numbers) who have mileage sharing programs with Delta and Continental.  There is also TAM Meridional, another large member who has many flights with identical routes as Varig (the countries largest carrier).  TAM works with Air France and American Airlines.  There is also VASP which was a very large airline in Brazil but during the season from 1999 to 2000 they had some major financial troubles and were forced to halt many of their flights.  When searching for the perfect itinerary you may also find two airlines called Nordeste and Rio Sul.  They are regional carriers operated by Varig, no different than Varig itself, with the exception of smaller planes.  It is like American Airlines and American Eagle.

You could also fly out from Los Angeles, on American Airlines (via New York JFK or Miami), Delta (via Atlanta), Continental (via New York/Newark) or on Varig (via Sao Paulo).  You can connect from just about every major city in the United States and many in Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Europe to do the same trip.
